“I believe the children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way”
Whitney Houston – Greatest Love of All
We’ve all heard this quote mentioned ad nauseam in reference to children and securing their future through guidance, love and nurture. At its core, it is about building our future. Building our children. Building our society.
The future in 2019 is tech. The future in any year, decade or century is our children. So we have to merge the two. It’s only logical.
As pioneers in e-commerce in Jamaica, we feel it is our duty to work constantly towards educating our public on the pros and cons of operating within the digital space. One of the benefits of the internet of things are all the career opportunities that have been created as a result. Careers in tech are some of the most sought after and well-paid jobs currently. With continuing advancements in tech, we can look forward to more positions being created.
Let’s take a deeper look at some of the benefits of a career in tech and how it can be applied to our youths in Jamaican:
Constant Job Creation
One of the biggest issues affecting our youth in Jamaica is that of job creation and opportunities. We tend to limit our career potential and that of our children by thinking that we should only operate career wise within the confines of a brick and mortar structure. The wonderful world of tech counters that thinking by opening up the world to us through the internet. With technology and the internet, we have job positions like Digital Marketer, Front End Developer, Content Writer, Web Developer, Software Developer, Data Analyst among other titles most of which are taught locally at our colleges, institutions and university. Some of these courses are also taught online for FREE with Udemy.com or Coursera.com. The list of new jobs being created grows each year and due to the scarcity of individuals qualified for these positions, they tend to pay well and are plentiful.
Entry level positions such as Virtual Personal Assistants are a great way to get your older child accustomed to working online. Also, there are tons of opportunities to start a business and become an entrepreneur online. One such opportunity locally is opening a CoolMarket seller account where you can advertise and sell products through our platform, to the Jamaican audience. All you need is a product or service to sell, access to a computer and internet.
Remote Working & Traveling
Most of the jobs listed above can be done while working remotely. Working remotely means that you can work from home or anywhere you wish, as long as there is internet access. This is a new and current trend in the world of work in North America with opportunities at these companies extending to anyone globally. This new movement is all the rage and allows for travelling the world while working. This benefit to a career in tech means our youth will have the advantage of gaining a meaningful income as well as the experience of new cultures. Some great sites to search for online jobs are Fiverr and Upwork. These jobs allow you to work on your own time which allows youth greater freedom to explore while earning.
Things move fast in the world of tech. New products are launched, new businesses emerge all with the focus of solving an issue faced by their audience. Frequent job creation and the constant novelty of it all means lots of promotions and opportunities for upward advancement. For our youth in Jamaica, this means rewarding but challenging and competitive work.
The month of May in Jamaica is an opportunity for us to reflect on and celebrate our youth. Their current contribution to our society and their potential future contribution. Consider exploring with your child a potential career in tech, their future self might just thank you for it.
