Alia Atkinson Ends Commonwealth Games With Disappointing Performances

Swimmer, Alia Atkinson failed to add to her 50m breaststroke silver medal as she finished in eighth place in the finals of the Women’s 50m butterfly final at the Optus Aquatic Centre in Gold Coast, Australia on Sunday.

Atkinson, who swam from lane one, touched the wall in a disappointing 27.35 seconds in the event, which was won by the favourite, Cate Campbell of Australia in 25.59 seconds. Campbell held off her fast finishing teammate, Holly Barratt who grabbed the silver medal in 25.67 seconds.

Another Australian, Madeline Groves ensured a clean sweep of the event by the host nation as he took the bronze medal in 25.69 seconds.

There was more disappointment for Atkinson on Sunday as she failed to make the 100m breaststroke final. She finished a disappointing seventh in her semis with a time of 1:09.83.

On Friday’s final of the 50m breaststroke, Atkinson could only produce 30.76 seconds in the championship race as she finished behind England’s Sarah Vasey, who posted 30.60 seconds for the win.

Atkinson’s silver medal is the only medal received so far at the Commonwealth Games for Jamaica.
