The Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) says all systems are in place for the Office Electoral Office to receive nominations of candidates for the by-election in the constituency of Portland Eastern.
Ann Marie Vaz is expected to be nominated for the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and Damion Crawford for the People’s National Party (PNP).
In a statement Tuesday, the EOJ said nomination will take place on Friday, March 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Port Antonio Court House.
Usually, the two main political parties agree on different times for their candidate accompanied by a few electors to go to conduct the nomination process.
The EOJ says also that on nomination day, any person wishing to register as a candidate is required to:
- fill out a nomination form which has been signed by any ten or more electors registered to vote in the constituency;
- return the form to the Returning Officer between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.; and
- pay a nomination fee of J$15,000.
The EOJ also reminded that under the Representation of the People (Amendment) Act 2014, political parties intending to contest elections must be registered with the Electoral Commission of Jamaica. Persons wishing to contest elections who are not members of registered political parties can do so as independent candidates. Additionally, the campaign financing and expenditure of candidates and political parties in the Portland Eastern by-elections will be monitored under the Representation of the People (Amendment) Act 2016.
