The Jamaican track-and-field fraternity was thrust into mourning on Tuesday as news surfaced of the shooting death of quarter-miler athlete Kavon Nelson.
Nelson, 25, was reportedly shot multiple times in the early hours of 12:30 a.m., this morning by gunmen who gained entry to his McVille Terrace home in Kingston.
Jamaica Today has been reliably informed that Nelson was pronounced dead upon arrival to hospital.
The Corporate Communications Unit (CCU) when contacted was unable to provide further details of the shooting.
Nelson, a former student of Calabar High School, was a member of the Aka Track Club at the time of his death. His most notable performance internationally was representing Jamaica at the 2014 NACAC under-23 championships.
News of Nelson’s untimely murder was a crushing blow to training partner and world championship silver medallist Javon Francis.
“RIP to my best friend, otherwise my traning partner. I never knew this day would come. You are a brother to me and someone who love and care and I just want to say I love you from the bottom of my heart you will still be in my heart,” Francis wrote in a post on Facebook.
More details to come.
