Police are calling on motor-vehicle owners to be careful who they rent their vehicles to, as criminals are believed to be using rentals as transportation to commit crimes.
“It is a practice that we continue to see very often and we are calling on individuals to be on the lookout for these individuals,” two senior police officers told Jamaica Today.
Police said several of the drive-by attacks that are being carried out in and around the country are by criminals using rented vehicles. They said these types of situations place the owners of these vehicles in problems when the culprits are caught.
The most recent of these drive-by attacks took place three weeks ago on Alexander Road in St Andrew. A man identified as Lance Thompson, a 29-year-old tyre repairman of Rodney Road, St Andrew was killed in the attack and one woman injured.
Reports are that Thompson and the female were standing on Alexander Road when a white Nissan Tiida motorcar drove up to them. Men alighted from the vehicle and opened gunfire, hitting both.
The injured persons were rushed to hospital, where Thompson was pronounced dead and the female admitted.
The Hunts Bay police are investigating the incident.
