Minister of National Security Dr Horace Chang says the States of Emergency in Western Jamaica (SOEs) are already working.
The SOEs were declared April 30 to cover St James, Hanover and Westmoreland.
Speaking at the opening of the Burke Barracks in St James Tuesday, May 14, Dr Chang said that already, the SOEs were having a positive effect on crime. He said that over the first 12 days of the SOEs, there have been only two reported homicides when compared “to the almost two per day we were having.”
The new Burke Barracks accommodation is being constructed in two phases at a combined cost of $1.6 billion to house 528 members of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF). Phase one has been built at a cost of $708 million and will house 264 persons.
The Minister said this showed the commitment of the Government to the Forces and he said this was timely now that the SOEs were in place in the West, requiring the involvement of JDF personnel.
