Minister of Justice Minister Delroy Chuck has withdrawn comments he made on Wednesday relating to the arrest and charge of former Education Minister Ruel Reid, his wife (Sheren) and daughter (Sharelle) along with CMU President Professor Fritz Pinnock, and JLP Councillor for the Brown’s Town division in St. Ann, Kim Brown Lawrence.
Mr Chuck noted that he had said, about the arrest of Ruel Reid, Fritz Pinnock and others was inspired by the fact that the media was present at all locations during this early morning raids. He said “as Justice Minister, my comments were inappropriate and I duly withdraw them in their entirety.”
His retraction, Thursday, came following harsh comments from the People’s National Party. The PNP Youth Organization said that Minister Chuck should resign.
Opposition Spokesman on Justice, Donna Scott-Motley also reacted strongly saying the comments were unfortunate and she was deeply disappointed.
The PNP as well as people on social media also claimed a conflict of interest, with Mr Chuck’s daughter Carolyn Chuck being the legal representative for the Reid family.
However, Minister Chuck said he and his daughter live separate, independent and professional lives.
The investigation is a joint operation between the Financial Investigation Division of the Ministry of Finance and MOCA.
