Clarendon and St Catherine join four other parishes partly or fully covered by States of Emergency (SOE), following a declaration Thursday morning, September 5.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness Thursday announced, at a press conference at the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) that a state of emergency had been declared for Clarendon one of the most murderous parishes in Jamaica, and in St Catherine. The SOEs cover the entire area of both large parishes.
SOEs are already in force in the western parishes of St James, Hanover, and Westmoreland, since April 30 and also in South St Andrew.
Earlier this year people had asked why the SOE was not imposed in Clarendon which was running the third-highest murder figures.
Last year, there was a State of Emergency in St Catherine North but it was lifted after the Opposition did not support the extension of SOEs, including the one then in place in St James and one in parts of the Corporate Area.
