The Jamaica Police Federation says it is “shocked and outraged” by the comments made by Minister of National Security, Dr. Horace Chang, that the police force cannot be repaired.
Dr. Chang was speaking this week at a forum organized by CAPRI and was asked about the transformation of the Force. He said it could not be changed but the Government was committed to providing a better police service. He argued that this would be achieved through training and recruitment of new members.
The Federation said the “Minister’s comments that the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) cannot be changed is infelicitous and paints the JCF” in a very negative light.
The Federation said the minister further states that the current police force is unprofessional and beyond repair. “We believe that this has further demoralized and demotivated the hardworking rank and file members of the Constabulary Force,” the Federation said.
It says it is unfortunate that “the Minister sees the police force as irreparable.”
The Federation says it wants an immediate retraction of the Minister’s comments and will be writing to Dr. Chang for a meeting over the matter.
