Five illegal weapons were seized and four men, including a soldier, were taken into custody in separate incidents across three parishes within the last twenty-four hours, the police reported Thursday morning.
On Wednesday, October 17 about 5:00 a.m., Police on operation in Ten Mile, Bull Bay, St. Thomas seized one Pietro Berretta .380 pistol and eight .380 rounds of ammunition during the search of a premises. Forty-two-year-old Ricardo Francis, a mechanic of Jacks vale, Gypsum Road in the parish was arrested in connection with the seizure. He is scheduled to appear in the Corporate Area Gun Court on Thursday, October 25.
About 7:30 a.m., during a joint Police/Military operation, members of the security forces who are working in the State of Public Emergency in Kingston, searched an unoccupied house; one Glock pistol with a magazine containing five rounds of ammunition was found hidden in a clothes basket. No arrest was made.
Later that morning, the Spanish Town Police seized one 9mm pistol with two rounds of ammunition following a confrontation with a gunman on the Ackles Hill main road, Kitson Town, St. Catherine. He was identified as 35-year-old Garth Thomas who was fatally shot during that incident. The Inspectorate of Constabulary (IOC) and the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) are investigating.
Still on Wednesday, about 5:30 p.m. another operation yielded success as 27-year-old Ricardo Linton was accosted at Big Lane, Central Village, St. Catherine and a Berretta Nano pistol with nine rounds of ammunition taken from him. He was subsequently charged with Illegal Possession of Firearm and Ammunition.
And a member of the Jamaica Defense Force Coastguard was arrested and charged after an illegal weapon along with ammunition was taken from him on Oliver Road in Rock fort, Kingston 3.
Reports are that Police on patrol in the area saw the soldier walking along the roadway. He was accosted and searched and a 9mm Browning pistol with a magazine containing thirteen rounds of ammunition seized.
The officer, whose identity is being withheld is from White Hall, Kingston 8.
