Police have arrested and charged a Portmore, St Catherine man who they said tried to export ganja disguised in cans of cheese.
He has been identified as 56-year-old Donovan Dacosta, a vendor and construction worker of Passagefort, St. Catherine. Dacosta was arrested by the Narcotics police on Saturday, August 4, and charged for breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act.
DaCosta is scheduled to appear in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Friday, August 10. He has been charged with: possession of ganja, dealing in ganja and taking steps preparatory to export ganja.
Reports are that about midday, Saturday, Dacosta went to one of the shipping agencies at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, where he attempted to ship a package containing several cans of cheese and baked goods to St Maarten. During processing, anomalies were discovered and the Narcotics Police were called.
He was arrested when 61 pounds of ganja was found hidden inside 17 of the cans of cheese. The drug has an estimated street value of J$244, 000.
