There will be a contest in the South East Clarendon By-Election set for March 2, following the nomination of an Independent candidate, ahead of the expected formalities by Pearnel Charles Jr of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) later.
Derrick Lambert was nominated this morning at Vere, in the Constituency, the Nomination Centre operated by the Electoral Office of Jamaica.
Lambert said people had come to his home to tell him he should contest. He said he had gone ahead because there were “barbarians at the gate”. He said immediately that he was speaking figuratively.
Mr Charles is expected to be nominated around 1 p.m.
The PNP is not contesting the elections. That had raised the prospect that Mr Charles Jr would be declared elected without contest.
