Owen Speid (left) is taking the torch of leadership from President of the Jamaica Teachers Association, Dr. Garth Anderson, as part of the long-standing annual investiture ceremony. At the end of the process, on Monday night, August 19, at the Hilton Rose Hall, St James, Mr. Speid became President of the JTA and Dr. Anderson Immediate Past President. The third person in the JTA’s Presidential group is Jasford Gabriel who was inducted as President-Elect following his win in internal elections earlier this year.

Having been given the instruments of authority and having had the torch passed to him, Mr. Speid tries the gavel, a tool in his leadership kit.

Monday evening’s session on the first day of the conference that runs until Wednesday was addressed by Speid and Anderson. Speid’s wide-ranging speech called for the naming of a full Minister of Education. Acting Minister of Education, Karl Samuda was among the guests.
