Man Dies In Prison 40 Years Later Without Trial

A photo of the deplorable physical condition of Noel Chambers which appeared on social media has caused dismay and horror among twitter users.

What is alarming is that Chambers, aged 81, died at the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre where he had been imprisoned since February 1980 and spent 40 years there without ever being tried and found guilty of an offence. He was 41 years old when he was taken in and presumably forgotton until his death earlier this year.

The media only got wind of his death and the circumstances surrounding it, when the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) mentioned it and said his death had opened up a wider probe into the conditions and procedures at Jamaica’s prisons.
