The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) and other regulatory stakeholders continue the celebration of National Environmental Awareness Week (NEAW) which started from June 1-8, 2020. During the week, the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) will observe Solid Waste Day on Saturday, June 6, 2020, under the theme: SOLID – Stamp out Littering and Illegal Dumping!
Executive Director of the NSWMA, Mr Audley Gordon, says the clearing of illegal dumps costs the Authority millions of dollars annually.
“We take illegal dumping so seriously, that we are going to be dedicating an entire programme to this particular message. A live broadcast on the Impact of Illegal Dumping will be carried on Nationwide News 90FM from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today, June 5. It is costing us too much, and we also know the devastating impact that it is having on the environment. We want to bring the attention of the country to illegal dumping as we attack this economically devastating monster. We want to get the conversation going at the community level where people see this, not as something that is being done by the NSWMA, but as a duty they have to protect the environment and to keep their communities clean,” he said.
As part of its SOLID campaign, the Authority will also launch its mobile app to facilitate the tracking of littering and illegal dumping on World Environment Day (June 5, 2020).
The app allows residents to direct an issue of illegal dumping and littering straight to NSWMA representatives by simply opening the app, taking a photo, and submitting a report. Users can include their contact information when submitting reports in the app to be notified when a site is cleaned up, or if more information is needed.
The app is available for both iOS and Android users and can be accessed by typing NSWMA in the Apple or Google Play app store.
