Firefighters have managed to bring a massive blaze near the Riverton City landfill in Kingston under control. Jamaica Fire Brigade Divisional Head Julian Davis-Buckle told Jamaica Today that a large stack of tyres that was on fire along Parkway Road had now been contained.
Firefighters, who had been battling the blaze since about 1:30 am, got support from a helicopter from the Jamaica Defence Force.
Davis-Buckle told Jamaica Today news team that several units are working overtime to cool the fire. “Presently we have the fire surrounded with four units in operation. The fire is basically under control and surrounded, but we have a lot of work to do still,” she said.
The firefighter in chief said an estimation of the damage cannot be determined until a full investigation is completed. She also said that no lives have lost from the fire but could not confirm if anyone has suffered any injuries from the fire.
“No, we have no injuries and no reports of any fatalities,” she said.
It is unclear how the fire started; however, reports are that the fire was observed around 1: 00 a.m. near the entrance of the landfill and an alarm was raised.
