The People’s National Party Youth Organization (PNP YO) developed a ’50 for 50 Scholarship Programme’ to celebrate its 50 years of existence.

The programme will provide funding of up to 50% in aid towards paying tuition for tertiary level students.

Today (October 7), the first scholarship ceremony was held at the International University of the Caribbean. PNP YO President, Krystal Tomlinson, says this is an opportunity for the recipients to get busy and change the world.

Tomlinson, also said the YO will also open its own VISION chapter on the IUC campus. This move is intended to help with getting young people to enumerate, and provide them with educational opportunities.

Incoming President of the University, Rev. Dr Roderick R. Hewitt, applauded the YO for a move he calls revolutionary. Hewitt said, “This is the act of setting people free”. He told the scholarship awardees to “run from political parties that want to control you”

An awardee, Aduke Jones, who lost her father at an early age, shared that her mother has been diagnosed with cancer and that she became pregnant at 14 years of age. Jones shared just how much the ’50 for 50 scholarship’ will aid her in obtaining a university degree. She also said that it will motivate her to help others. Jones’s revelation left the entire audience in tears.

The event’s guest speaker, North West Manchester Member Parliamentament, Mikael Phillips, advised students that failure is not an option. Phillips highlighted a quote from Marcus Garvey “If you liberate the minds of men, ultimately you liberate the body of men”. He gave numerous examples of why taking opportunities and running with them are important.

Phillips ended by encouraging awardees to understand, accept, and believe in themselves that they can attain success. The ceremony ended with the 50 awardees receiving their scholarships.

Jamaica Today spoke with Vice President of PNP YO, Akeem Dobson, who is the conceptualizer of the programme. He expounded on the programme and the day’s event in the audio clip .
