Prime Minister Andrew Holness during an “urgent” press conference today, June 14, told the nation that he has recommended to Governor-General Sir Patrick Allen, that he is to declare States of Public Emergency (SOE) in Kingston Central and Kingston Western Police Divisions for a period of 14-days.
Following the recommendation, PM Holness says the GG has affirmed his signature and the SOE will begin today, Sunday, June 14.
This, therefore, means communities in around Bull Bay, East Queens Street and Stuton Street in the Kingston Central division, along with communities in and around Tivoli Gardens and Denham Town in the Western Kinston Police Division will see an increasing number of security personnel as Jamaica seeks to reduce its crime rate and dismantle gangs within these divisions.
The SOEs will be manned by both the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the Jamaica Defense Force.
In an effort to calm the nerves of business operators, PM Holness, gave reassurance that businesses within Central and Western Kingston should not worry as the current all Island curfew which officially begins today at 10 P.M. will be maintained under this newly signed states of emergency.
He also warned criminals who may see or feel the need to attempt to extort businesses and vendors, to not try it as they will be caught and dealt with.
PM Holness was joined at the press conference by the head of the Jamaica Defense Force – Lieutenant General Rocky Ricardo Meade, Commissioner of Police Major General Antony Anderson, Portfolio Minister Horace Chang, and two other cabinet members.
