The Meteorological Service says a compact, Tropical Storm Dorian is expected to strengthen today, Monday, August 26 bringing tropical storm conditions to the Windward Islands.
At 5:00 a.m. the center of Tropical Storm Dorian was located near latitude 11.9 degrees North, longitude 56.4 degrees West. Dorian is moving toward the west near 22 km/h, and this motion should continue through tonight.
A turn toward the west-northwest is expected later today, with this motion continuing through Tuesday night. On the forecast track, the centre of Dorian is expected to be near the Windward Islands late today and tonight and move into the Eastern Caribbean Sea on Tuesday.
Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 95 km/h with higher gusts. Slow strengthening is forecast during the next few days, and Dorian could be near hurricane strength by Tuesday and Wednesday while it is over the Eastern Caribbean Sea.
Tropical Storm Dorian is not a threat to Jamaica at this time.
The Meteorological Service will continue to monitor the progress of this system.
