With temperatures ranging from 27 to 33 degrees, this summer is warming to be one of the hottest yet. Before you start standing in front of your freezer to get cool, check out these simple ways you can cool down for the summer.
Wear more cotton:
Something as simple as swapping out your polyester and spandex for more breathable fabrics such as cotton can make a world of difference in keeping you cool. Cotton allows air to easily pass through and wicks away sweat.
This might go without saying but staying hydrated is essential to staying cool. As the summer heat increases, so should your water intake. Reduce caffeinated beverages, sodas and alcohol and instead replace them with pure or infused water. Ensure you always have a bottle of water with you while you’re on the go and remember the environment by travelling with a reusable option. FYI, mild to moderate dehydration may include the following increased thirst, dry mouth, tired or sleepy, decreased urine output, urine is low volume and more yellowish than normal, headache, dry skin, dizziness and few or no tears.
Stay in as much as you can:
Yes! You have permission to stay at home or at least plan your outdoor activities late in the evening when you can. Take advantage of bearer/delivery services and shopping online where possible.
Invest in cooling appliances:
If you’ll be spending more time indoors then you’ll want to ensure your rooms are as cool as possible. Fans are traditionally what we use in Jamaica to temper the heat, but with some of the highest recorded temperatures being felt island-wide, investing in an AC unit might be worth looking into this summer. If you are now worried about your light bill investing in an inverter unit is the way to go to as it is one of the best energy saving options on the market.
Summer days are meant for pool parties, friends, food and did we mention the pool. Cool down by taking a splish splash with friends or family. If a pool isn’t accessible then there is the beach, we are an island after all. Any clean body of water that takes the heat off is where we will be parked all summer long. Keep meals simple or cook in bulk:
Cut the time you spend in the kitchen slaving over a hot stove by making simpler meals. Smoothies, salads and cold soups are refreshing meals you can make with little to no effort. You can also do one big cooking on a Sunday and reheat food as needed. Slow cookers and rice cookers make meal prep a breeze and the best part? You don’t have to stay in the kitchen the entire time!
