Woman Suspected To Have Committed Suicide In Clarendon

Twenty-nine-year-old Nordia Markland of Shannon Lloyd Crescent in Clarendon was found dead on Saturday at her home in what police investigators believe is a suspected suicide.

Reports are that about 4:00 a.m., Markland was found hanging from a beam on the outside of her house.

The police were summoned and the body was removed to the morgue for a post-mortem examination.

No mark of violence was observed on the body.

Statistics from the Economic and Social Survey produced by the Planning Institute of Jamaica which showed that 55 Jamaicans committed suicide in 2016, a decrease from the 59 cases in 2015. The figures for 2017 and 2018 have not yet been published.

Statistics show that Jamaica has one of the lowest rates of suicide per capita, but health care professionals have long warned that the factors which lead to suicide and suicidal ideations, such as mental illness abound, and should not be ignored.
